Tech Support Scams

Many scams begin with a phone call from someone claiming to be from a well-known technology company stating a virus has been detected on your computer. The fake technician requests a payment for virus software or request to be given permission to gain access to your computer remotely. The call seems to be legitimate because the fraudster on the other end sounds very convincing and the caller ID even displays the company name. Before falling victim, educate yourself on tech support scams. the following article provides information on these types of tech support scams and what to do if you think you have been scammed: https://www.fraud.org/tech_support_scams.

Should you ever have Questions about your computer safety and its connection with your accounts at SNB please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for trusting Security National Bank as your financial institution

Fraudulent Email Notice

To continue keeping your business and business accounts secure from fraudulent activity we are making you aware of a new scam that is being reported that involves ACH fraud. Other banks are reporting instances where a company receives an email that appears to be from one of their employees requesting to change the account number that they are receiving their direct deposit. The company makes the changes without verifying the employee, and the money is deposited into a scammers account.

Please remember that email addresses can be altered to appear that they are from an employee but have really come from a scammer. It is important to verify any change of account information with employee, or receiver of funds, anytime account information is being changed for ACH transfers. Also, signed authorizations need to be updated with the new account information.

Should you ever have questions about ACH rules or authorizations, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for trusting Security National Bank as your financial institution.

Securing New Devices

Securing New Devices

During the holidays, internet-connected devices also known as Internet of Things (IoT) are often popular gifts-such as smart TVs, watches, toys, phones, and tablets. This technology provides a level of convenience to our lives, but it requires that we share more information than ever. The security of this information, and the security of these devices is not always guaranteed. The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC), part of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), recommends these important steps you should consider to make your Internet of Things more secure:

Use strong passwords. Some Internet-enabled devices are configured with default passwords to simplify setup. These default passwords are easily found online, so they don’t provide any protection. Choose strong passwords to help secure your device.

Evaluate your security settings. Most devices offer a variety of features that you can tailor to meet your needs and requirements. Enabling certain features to increase convenience or functionality may leave you more at risk. It is important to examine the settings, particularly security settings, and select options that meet your needs without putting you at increased risk.

Ensure you have up-to-date software. When manufactures become aware of vulnerabilities in their products, they often issue patches to fix the problem. Patches are software updates that fix a particular issue or vulnerability within your device’s software. Make sure to apply relevant patches as soon as possible to protect your devices.

Connect carefully. Once your device is connected to the Internet, it’s also connected to millions of other computers, which could allow attackers access to your device. Consider whether continuous connectivity to the Internet is needed.
