Fake Check Scams

Fake Check Scams

There are many variations of fraudulent check scams. One of the newest is a scam where fraudulent checks are being deposited through mobile deposit. In some cases, customers are being recruited to “work from home”, in others the customer is tricked into thinking they are receiving an online loan. Whatever the case is, the customer is being told that to receive their pay, they will need to provide their online/mobile banking username and password. Once the fraudster obtains the username and password, they login and deposit a fraudulent check. Many times, money is already spent before the check gets returned as fraud, so the customer stays owing the bank.

Customers should always be cautious of any type of offer that asks for an online banking username and/or password. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
