SNB Helps Raise Dollars for New Police Dog

Enid Paws for the Cause Dachshund Dash Raises $10,000

On July 27, 2013 over 40 canine athletes took to the track to help raise dollars for a new Enid Police Department K9 partner. When the dust settled Enid’s Paws 4 the Cause Dachshund Dash raised $10,000. “We are thrilled there was so much support for the even and for the cause”, said April Danahy, an Enid Paws 4 the Cause committee member, “it truly was a community effort.” Twenty four sponsors including Park Avenue Thrift and dozens of volunteers helped pave the way for the race which was presented by Security National Bank, Eagle Marketing, and the Chisholm Trail Expo Center.

“To raise that amount of cash is just amazing,” said Frank Baker, a Paws 4 the Cause committee member. “The crowd was excellent, the support was terrific, I think the Dachshund Dash will grow in numbers not only in competing athletes but the crowd.” Dachshund athletes came from eight different Oklahoma communities and from Texas and Arkansas to compete in four different racing categories: puppy, adult, senior, and mixed breed. The champion and grand champion of each of the divisions have earned the right to compete at the National Dachshund Races in Ohio on September 26th.

A check for $10,000 will be presented to Enid Police Chief Brian O’Rourke during an Enid city commission meeting. “We are grateful for the community’s support of our department and especially the K9 unit. This donation is tremendous and will certainly help secure a new addition to our K9 unit” said Chief O’Rourke.

Enid Paws 4 the Cause is an annual event. The Paws 4 the Cause committee consists of Jonie Ehrman, Lynne Benkendorf, April Danahy, Frank Baker and Steve Barnes. Each year the cause will change depending on the community’s animal related needs.

Sponsors of the 2013 Enid Paws for the Cause Dachshund Dash include; title sponsor Park Avenue Thrift, Integris Bass Baptist Hospital, JB Liquor, The Groom Closet, Dillingham Insurance, Enid Pet Hospital, Wymer Brownlee, Gungoll, Jackson, Box and Devoll P.C., Northcutt Chevrolet, Jackson’s of Enid, Ward Petroleum, State Senator Patrick Anderson, McDonald’s of Enid, Groendyke Transport, Humphrey Abstract, Garfield Furniture, Grand Avenue Lighting, Muncy Photography, TPI Staffing Service, Oakwood Mall, and Pope Distributing.

Dachshund Race Date Set and a New Twist

Security National Bank of Enid, Park Avenue Thrift, Eagle Marketing and the Chisholm Trail Expo Center are once again joining forces to help raise funds to purchase a K-9 partner for the Enid Police Department. Funds will be raised with the help of “dashing” dachshunds.

The National Dachshund foundation sanctioned 4th annual Enid Paws 4 the Cause will be held July 27th at the Expo Center. This year funds will be raised to aid the Enid Police Department with the purchase of a new K9 partner. The K9 partner is needed to succeed retiring K9 partner “Thor”. The new dog will be trained in the areas of drug identification and patrol.

Three age groups of dachshund athletes will compete for the title of Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion which will qualify them for the national race in Finlay, Ohio. The age groups are: puppies 4 months to one year in age, adults one year to eight years in age, and seniors eight years and up. All racers must be full blooded dachshund. This year there will be additional races for “mixed breed dachshunds”. The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of those races will also qualify for the national race in Finlay, Ohio.

This is the fourth year for the event which continues to grow. Funds raised previously have helped; purchase Enid Police Department K9 Partner Anakin, furnish trees and shrubs for Enid’s dog park, furnish watering stations for pets on the City of Enid’s Master Trail, and most recently help provide outside adoption areas at the Enid Animal Shelter.

Owners may register their dachshund athletes at the Groom Closet 2005 West Chestnut Avenue. Registered dachshunds will be randomly drawn to be chosen to participate in the dash. Limited racing spots are available. There is a $20 registration fee for those racers registered by the July 08, 2013 deadline. Late registration fee for entries received after July 8th is $45. Online Safety Tips

Tips to Reduce the Amount of Spam You Receive

Spam is the electronic version of “junk mail”. The term refers to unsolicited, often unwanted, email messages. Spam does not necessarily contain viruses – valid messages from legitimate sources could fall into this category.

Steps to reduce the amount of spam you receive:

*Don’t give your email address out arbitrarily – Email addresses have become so common that a space for them is often included on any form that asks for your address – even comment cards at restaurants.  It seems harmless; so many people write them in the space provided without realizing what could happen to that information.  Sometimes this information is sold or shared with other companies, and suddenly you are receiving email that you didn’t request.

*Be aware of options selected by default – When you sign up for some online accounts or services, there may be a section that provides you with the option to receive email about other products and services.  Sometimes there are options selected by default, so if you do not deselect them, you could begin to receive email from those lists as well.

*Report messages as spam – Most email clients offer an option to report a message as spam or junk.  Take advantage of it.  Reporting messages as spam or junk helps to train the mail filter so that the messages aren’t delivered to your inbox.  However, check your junk or spam folders occasionally to look for legitimate messages that were incorrectly classified as spam.

*Don’t follow links in spam messages – Some spam relies on generators that try variations of email addresses at certain domains.  If you click a link within an email message or reply to a certain address, you are just confirming that your email address is valid.  Unwanted messages that offer an “unsubscribe” option are particularly tempting, but this is often just a method for collecting valid addresses and you are confirming the validity by unsubscribing. Often it will only increase the amount of spam you receive.
